Gangotri is the origin of the River Ganges and seat of the goddess Ganga. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga and is one of the four sites in the Char Dham pilgrimage. The Ganga descends from Gaumukh glacier, which is about 19 km from Gangotri.
